Whether you’re an experienced rock climber or trying it out for the first time, Frenchman Coulee in Vantage, Washington is the perfect place to get hands-on with some incredible basalt rock. It’s one of the top climbing destinations in the state—and now I know why!

Located right between Seattle and Spokane (just about two hours from each), Frenchman Coulee draws climbers from all over Washington thanks to its impressive rock formations, sunny weather, and wide range of climbing routes.

Head to the famous Sunshine Wall, one of the most popular spots in the coulee. From the parking area, there’s a short and scenic hike to get there. You’ll follow the trail up to the top of the mesa, then continue along the ridgeline toward the Columbia River. Signs help guide the way, and eventually you’ll pass through a narrow rock slot that opens into a dramatic canyon. That’s when you know you’ve arrived.

As the name suggests, Sunshine Wall gets plenty of sun—so if you’re climbing in the summer, come early or pack lots of water. Temps can easily climb past 100°F midday.

The wall boasts 91 routes ranging from beginner-friendly 5.6s to advanced 5.12+ climbs. I worked on a few 5.10s, but my favorite was the well-known 5.7 “Chossmaster.” About halfway up, there’s a ledge where you can stop, catch your breath, and take in the stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge.

Whether you’re a first-timer lor a seasoned climber, Sunshine Wall and the greater Frenchman Coulee climbing area are absolutely worth checking out. There’s truly something here for everyone.
